Mayor R.T. Rybak started a state political action committee on Monday, according to an Associated Press report, but he said today it’s not a harbinger of his political future.

Rybak told the Southwest Journal that “RYPAC” was formed because he had paid off his failed gubernatorial race and had $2,500 left over. Rybak can use money from the new PAC for statewide campaigns — his own or for other candidates.

“When we paid off the governor account, we had $2,500 left over and so we put it into RYPAC, but that is the full extent of what we’ve really thought about, how or even whether that would be used,” he said. “It doesn’t have anything to do with anything other than the fact that we had $2,500 left over after paying off the governor’s account.”

Rybak has said he intends to make up his mind about running in 2013 for a fourth term as mayor by Jan. 1.
